Description: Many of us are teaching about the Third Sector in countries that see huge swings in regime ideologies – democratic regimes are toppled, and authoritarian governments installed; authoritarians are finally toppled, and democracy is re-installed. Even between regimes of similar ideologies, there may be vastly different policies on the role of the sector in service delivery and policy advocacy, and we have recently seen presidents elected who, once in office, move towards more authoritarian policies by suppressing any kind of criticism including from the Third Sector. As educators, we need to understand how we teach the history of these changes. We also may face direct challenges to our jobs and, in the most extreme of circumstances, to our personal physical safety. This seminar examines the Latin American context of teaching about the sector through regime changes. Three educators and researchers will discuss the impact of such changes in their country and in their own teaching, and how it might impact on our students as they prepare for future work in their communities.

Volunteering during crises according to volunteers and coordinators: intentions to engage, trust towards organizations, and perspectives for the future

Thursday 25th January 2024

Watch Recording

Speaker: Iwona Nowakowska, Ph.D., Assistant Professor at Maria Grzegorzewska University, Warsaw, Poland, and Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, Brescia, Italy

Description
The last social crises in Europe (COVID-19 pandemic, migration, and refugee crises) evoked social support mobilization. This mobilization often took place as spontaneous, episodic volunteering (short-term, concentrated on a particular cause), not necessarily performed in an organization with which the volunteers had collaborated. Such help

was often not regulated by nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), which has its advantages and threats for those who give and receive help and NGOs.

Answering this observation, we have researched volunteers and volunteer coordinators. We asked ourselves how people with experience of volunteering intend to act in the case of a hypothetical pandemic or refugee crisis, how they trust governmental, non-governmental organizations and self-help groups, what personality-level factors relate to these aspects, and how coordinators perceive these issues in the context of pursuing their organizations' goals. We conducted two parallel studies in countries differing in their experience with the pandemic and refugee crisis: Poland and Italy.

The webinar will be divided into three parts. The first and second parts will concentrate on the results from the survey studies on people with volunteering experience (287 volunteers from Poland and 231 from Italy). The first part will focus on the results regarding the willingness to volunteer in various ways during crises. The second will concentrate on the results regarding trust towards governmental and nongovernmental institutions and self-help groups. The third part will be based on the results from the written interviews with volunteer coordinators (28 from Poland and 27 from Italy). We will present how they perceive the engagement of episodic and long-term volunteers during crises and their needs regarding volunteer engagement.

Each part will consist of a presentation of results and an interactive part involving the audience (questions, discussion, brainstorming). At all stages, the audience will be welcome to share experiences from their countries and personal/research practice regarding the topic. The final part of the webinar will conclude with perspectives on the future of nongovernmental organizations' engagement during crises and a discussion about opportun ities and threats of episodic volunteering and self-help groups for these organizations.

Funding
Polish National Agency for Academic Exchange, scholarship no. International Society for Third-Sector Research (ISTR) is a major international association promoting research and education in the fields of civil society, philanthropy, and the nonprofit sector. Based in the USA, it operates internationally.

The French Institute for Civil Society Organisations (Institut Français du Monde Associatif – IFMA) aims to reinforce understanding of the civil society sector in order to advance its recognition, its support, and to equip CSO actors and
their partners to deal with challenges that inhibit its development. Created in France in 2019, it operates at the European level.

The Maecenata Foundation is an independent think tank specialising in the subjects of civil society, civic
engagement, philanthropy and foundations. It sees itself as an impartial advisor to civil society and advocates for the transnational empowerment of civil society and the development of an open society in Europe and beyond.

Together we
are pleased to launch the ISTR Europe and Neighbors research network. This network aims at bringing together researchers from all disciplines whose teaching, research and practice is connected to the various manifestations of the third sector and
democracy, including civil society organizations, philanthropy, volunteering, social movements, social economy, and social innovation in and connected to European countries and its neighbours.

Our primary aim is to offer a space where
members can share scientific information and materials, publications, funding opportunities, calls for proposals, and can offer and benefit from mutual aid and advice from the community. This network will also aim to foster international collaboration
and research on European projects (such as COST, Horizon, Erasmus+, etc.).

This will be an opportunity to hear more about ISTR and IFMA’s work, to get to know one another, and for you to share your feedback on a set of priorities for the work of this group and how a network might best meet your needs and interests.
