ASSOCIATIONALISM: HISTORY, PRACTICES, AND LEGACIES (19TH–21ST CENTURIES)

Journal: Cadernos do Arquivo Municipal

Scientific Coordination
Joana Dias Pereira
Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Portugal

Submission Deadline
July 31, 2026

Synopsis
Rooted in centuries-old traditions of collective action, the associational movement—which emerged during the transition to modernity and continues to evolve today—reflects the economic, social, political, and cultural transformations of the last two centuries. Voluntary associations, which arose alongside the Enlightenment and liberalism, became key spaces for sociability, civic education, and political mobilization. They also served as instrumental institutions for resource management and the pursuit of common interests. From civic associations to recreational clubs, and from mutual aid societies to cooperatives and trade unions, the associational phenomenon has branched out, transcending social and national boundaries through a wide range of types and functions. Over the past two centuries, the associational impulse has fostered economic and social organizational alternatives to the State and the market, with associations playing a central role in the massification of political participation and the construction of collective identities. Associations have served as bastions of resistance against authoritarian and totalitarian regimes, proving to be crucial organizational resources during revolutionary processes and democratic transitions.

This dossier aims to reflect on associationalism by integrating historiographical, archival, and memory studies perspectives. Through original academic research, it seeks to analyze the associational phenomenon—in its diverse configurations and social functions—while highlighting the transnational circulation of models, ideas, and practices. It also aims to shed light on association archives and the challenges regarding their preservation, organization, and accessibility, as well as the dynamics of constructing collective memory around associationalism.

More information can be found here.

Charles E. Scheidt Faculty Fellows in Atrocity Prevention

Charles E. Scheidt Faculty Fellows in Atrocity Prevention
Institute for Genocide and Mass Atrocity Prevention
Binghamton University/SUNY

Now Accepting Applications for the 2026-26 Academic Year

Read the full call for applications here

Applications must be submitted no later than August 1, 2026

Every academic discipline has something to contribute to the protection of human rights and the prevention of large-scale, identity-based violence. The Institute for Genocide and Mass Atrocity Prevention (I-GMAP) at Binghamton University has pioneered the Charles E. Scheidt Faculty Fellows in Atrocity Prevention program to engage faculty in a guided process of learning and exploration of the potential for their own disciplines to contribute to atrocity prevention. Fellows learn from I GMAP’s faculty, staff and practitioner visitors and alongside faculty from a wide range of disciplines both within their cohort and from previous cohorts. The program culminates with each faculty member modifying at least one of their own courses to integrate an atrocity prevention lens through innovative and engaged pedagogical approaches.

The upcoming program runs from September 2026 through May 2027 (with a break during December and January), primarily in an online and asynchronous format, with synchronous meetings at the start and finish of the program.

Application Process

Faculty members can apply by using the simple form found here. If deans, chairs, or colleagues would like to nominate a faculty member for the program, we encourage them to share this call for applications with them directly or to contact Sellah King’oro Martens at skingoro@binghamton.edu to share that faculty member’s information.

Eligibility

The Faculty Fellowship is open to college/university educators from any country around the world. Faculty members from any college or university and from any and all disciplines and professional fields are eligible to become Fellows. The Faculty Fellowship Program is currently only available in English, so fluency in English is a requirement of participation.

I-GMAP takes a broad view of prevention—one that extends far beyond crisis management or intervention in the face of mass killing. Prevention includes strategies that can reduce the likelihood of violence before it starts, mitigate harm and motivate an end to conflicts once they begin, and rebuild in the aftermath of atrocities. Effective prevention encompasses all fields and professions – from humanities and social sciences, through the physical sciences and technical fields, and everything in between – and it takes a variety of forms.

This year, we hope to expand even further the number of disciplines covered by this
program so that even more students will be asked to consider how they can contribute to
the prevention of mass atrocities and other forms of identity-based violence throughout
their educational and professional careers.

Selection Criteria

In selecting among applicants for the Charles E. Scheidt Faculty Fellows program, the I-GMAP Co-Directors will be attentive to the stated rationale for interest reflected in the individual application as well as the diversity of disciplines represented in the overall group of awards. Since 2018, I-GMAP has supported over 220 faculty members from more than 50 disciplines from colleges and universities in more than 30 countries. This year, we will be accepting as many as 80 new faculty members to participate in the program from anywhere in the world.

Program Benefits

Scheidt Faculty Fellows will receive the following benefits:

Access (during and after the program) to a wealth of online materials related to atrocity prevention.

Potential to receive funding for events co-sponsored by I-GMAP.

Opportunity to receive travel expenses to attend the 2027 Frontiers of Prevention international forum hosted by I-GMAP in Binghamton, New York, in April 2027.

Official certificate upon completing all requirements of the fellowship.

Binghamton University faculty members will also receive research funds in the amount of $5,000 USD upon completion of the program.

Program Requirements

The program runs from September 2026 through May 2027 (excluding December and January), primarily in an online and asynchronous format, with synchronous meetings at the start and finish of the program. To successfully complete the program, Fellows must:

participate in person or virtually in synchronous meeting in late September (exact date and time TBD);

participate in a debriefing meeting in May 2025 (exact date TBD);

complete the 8 asynchronous online learning modules, which include readings, videos, discussions and reflections (roughly two weeks allotted per module with a
break during winter intercession);

submit a syllabus and related course materials demonstrating sufficient integration of atrocity prevention in learning outcomes, readings or other materials, and assignments.

Applications are open now and will be accepted until August 1, 2026. Selected applicants will be notified by August 30, 2026. Click here to apply. This work is especially critical at a time when philanthropy is being seen as a strategic response amid a decline in official development assistance and global instability. Comparative knowledge can inspire innovative solutions to domestic and cross-border challenges. It can also surface critical conversations about systemic barriers and disparities within and across countries and regions.
NSVQ Call for a Symposium: Volunteering and Civil Society in Rural Areas

NSVQ Call for a Symposium: Volunteering and Civil Society in Rural Areas

Guest editorial team: Evald Bundgård Iversen, University of Southern Denmark; Leonie
Lockstone-Binney, Griffith University, Kirsten Holmes, Curtin University; Tuuli-Marja
Kleiner, Thuenen Institute of Rural Studies

Background and Rationale
Rural communities worldwide often rely on civic engagement, including fire brigades, social
services, cultural and sports associations, and the maintenance of local infrastructure such as paths and communal facilities. Civic engagement can play an important role in sustaining social life and contributing to local service provision. However, the extent to which volunteering can compensate for structural deficits in service provision varies considerably across regions and is shaped by broader socio-economic, demographic, and institutional conditions. Research suggests that the availability and continuity of such services are unevenly distributed and highly context dependent. While the loss of services may contribute to out-migration, particularly among younger populations, it remains unclear to what extent voluntary engagement alone can mitigate these dynamics, especially in structurally disadvantaged and peripheral rural areas. This highlights the need for more nuanced and context-sensitive analyses of the relationship between civic engagement, service provision, and rural sustainability.

Despite the growing recognition of these dynamics, research on volunteering and civic
engagement continues to focus predominantly on urban contexts in empirical terms. Systematic cross-national comparisons of civic engagement in rural areas also remain rare (Anheier, 2023; Holanda et al., 2023). Additionally, civic engagement in rural areas is frequently treated as a homogenous phenomenon, with insufficient attention paid to the diverse structural, demographic, institutional, and spatial conditions that shape both the opportunities and constraints for engagement across different geographical and political contexts. This emphasizes the need for context-sensitive theorizing and internationally comparative analyses to better capture not only the contributions of volunteering, but also its uneven distribution, structural limitations, and differentiated implications for rural communities, in terms of their resilience and vulnerability. In proposing this call for a NSVQ symposium, we consider it timely given the selective re-population of some rural regions following pandemic-related shifts, alongside continued de-population and infrastructural decline of others. Recent research highlights the importance of local contexts in shaping patterns of volunteerism (Nesbit et al., 2025), while also pointing to the need for a more nuanced understanding of the conditions under which and the ways in which civil society in an interaction with government policies can play a role in addressing the societal challenges of rural areas (Iversen et al., 2025).

The symposium will seek to showcase contributions that highlight the diversity of challenges
affecting rural volunteering and civil society and, in doing so, it will draw on interdisciplinary
perspectives to illuminate the heterogenous nature of civil society in rural areas as shaped by
spatial, geography, political, structural and demographic factors, and to foster a more nuanced and context-sensitive understanding of the opportunities, constraints, and differentiated capacities of civil society.

The symposium will build upon momentum around the increasing visibility of the role of civil
society in rural areas, including a confirmed panel session on the topic at the 17th International Conference of the International Society for Third Sector Research (ISTR) in Lisbon.

References
Anheier, H. Fellows learn from I-GMAP’s faculty, staff and practitioner visitors and alongside faculty from a wide range of disciplines both within their cohort and from previous cohorts.

Apply here: https://binghamton.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_af4Y8IpDR7CorMq.

To date, I-GMAP has welcomed Faculty Fellows from a vast array of disciplines, including:
•History
•Nursing
•Theater and Dance
•Education
•Business and Management
•Data Science
•Comparative Literature
•Language Studies
•Cultural Studies
•Anthropology
•Political Science
•Public Administration
•Computer Science
•Environmental Studies

This year, we hope to expand even further the number of disciplines covered by this program so that even more students will be asked to consider how they can contribute to the prevention of mass atrocities and other forms of identity-based violence throughout their educational and professional careers.

•
Access (during and after the program) to a wealth of online materials related to atrocity prevention.
•Potential to receive funding for events co-sponsored by I-GMAP.
•Opportunity to receive travel expenses to attend the 2027 Frontiers of Prevention international forum hosted by I-GMAP in Binghamton, New York, in April 2027.
•Official certificate upon completing all requirements of the fellowship.
•Binghamton University faculty members will also receive research funds in the amount of $5,000 USD upon completion of the program.

Program Requirements
The program runs from September 2026 through May 2027 (excluding December and January), primarily in an online and asynchronous format, with synchronous meetings at the start and finish of the program. To successfully complete the program, Fellows must:
1.participate in person or virtually in synchronous meeting in late September (exact date and time TBD);
2.participate in a debriefing meeting in May 2025 (exact date TBD);
3.complete the 8 asynchronous online learning modules, which include readings, videos, discussions and reflections (roughly two weeks allotted per module with a break during winter intercession);
4.submit a syllabus and related course materials demonstrating sufficient integration of atrocity prevention in learning outcomes, readings or other materials, and assignments.

Applications are open now and will be accepted until August 1, 2026. Selected applicants will be notified by August 30, 2026. Apply here: https://binghamton.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_af4Y8IpDR7CorMq.

CALL FOR PAPERS

8th INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE “BETWEEN THE WORLDS: SOLIDARITY AND CIVIC ACTION IN TIMES OF UNCERTAINTY”

28 – 29 October 2026

(Hybrid Format)

Institute of Ethnology and Folklore Studies with Ethnographic Museum – Bulgarian Academy of Sciences

The teams of the ‘Between the Worlds’ Conference and the ‘Volunteerism in Bulgaria – History, Causes and Recommendations (Heroes)’ research project (2023–2027), funded by the Bulgarian National Science Fund, contract agreement No. KП-06-H80/10 from 15/12/2023, are pleased to announce their joint international conference ʽBetween the Worlds: Solidarity and Civic Action in Times of Uncertainty“.

The contemporary world faces overlapping crises, including geopolitical conflicts, migration, climate disasters, pandemics, economic instability, and social inequalities, that challenge traditional institutions and welfare systems. In response, civic engagement practices, such as volunteering and grassroots activism, emerge, redefining the lines between public and private, formal and informal, and individual and collective responsibilities. The conference “Between the Worlds: Solidarity and Civic Action in Times of Uncertainty” aims to examine these phenomena as complex social, cultural, political, and moral processes rather than mere responses to crises. It encourages interdisciplinary approaches across a wide range of fields, including anthropology, sociology, and political science, to explore how civic action is influenced by socioeconomic conditions and cultural frameworks.

The conference contributes to discussions on resilience, governance, and social cohesion, emphasising the need for a nuanced understanding of collective action in a fragmented world.

The conference seeks to connect researchers, practitioners, civil society actors, and representatives of non-governmental organisations to submit proposals for the 8th edition of its international academic forum. It will be held in a hybrid format (in-person and online) and aims to foster interdisciplinary dialogue on the role of volunteering, civic activism, solidarity, and charitable practice in contemporary societies.

Over the past editions, the ‘Between the Worlds’ conference series has established itself as a platform for rigorous scholarly exchange across the humanities and social sciences, with a particular focus on social dynamics, cultural processes, mobilities, and community resilience.

Thematic Focus
We welcome proposals that critically examine, but are not limited to, the following thematic areas:

Volunteering in Changing Societies: theories, histories, and practices of volunteerism; volunteer engagement in crisis, disaster, and post-crisis contexts; digital and transnational volunteering networks

Civic Activism and Social Change: grassroots mobilisation and civic empowerment; activism, rights-based movements, and participatory governance; intersections of activism with identity, culture, and community narratives

Solidarity: Concepts, Practices, and Challenges: forms of solidarity in multicultural, multilocal and multi-ethnic contexts; interpersonal, institutional, and global solidarity; solidarity in conditions of inequality, displacement, and marginalisation

Charity and Philanthropy in Local and Global Contexts: historical and ethnographic accounts of charitable practices; institutional philanthropy and civic partnerships; ethical dilemmas and impacts of charity in development and welfare

Intersections of Civic Engagement with Migration, Mobility, and Well-being: engagement of volunteers and activists in migrant and refugee support; civic responses to social exclusion and integration; stories of community resilience and mutual aid

Submission Guidelines
Interested participants are invited to submit:

Title of the paper

Abstract (200–250 words)

Five keywords

Full name, institutional affiliation, and contact email

Short biography (100–150 words, including research interests and relevant experience)

Submissions should be sent to bewconference@gmail.com with the subject line: BEW 2026

Abstract Submission.

Deadline for abstract submission: 30 June 2026
Notification of acceptance will be communicated by 15 July 2026.

Publication and Peer Review
Authors of accepted abstracts are encouraged to submit full papers for inclusion in the Conference Proceedings.

Call for papers: Special issue of Global Discourse

Civil Society in crisis? Extent, experiences, causes and consequences

We invite abstracts for a special issue on the theme of Civil Society in crisis – its extent, experiences, causes and consequences.

We provide the background to the theme and further details below. If you are interested, please get in touch with irene.hardill@northumbria.ac.uk and Rob.Macmillan@shu.ac.uk, or send an abstract of no more than 400 words (excluding any references) by the end of 29th March 2026.

Background

Civil Society across the globe exists in an unsettled and paradoxical frame. At once it is widely lauded for what it means, achieves and promises, yet simultaneously it can be challenged by ambivalence, indifference and insufficient support. The work of non-profit organisations, voluntary and community groups, social enterprises, volunteers and activist groups often attracts warm words, high hopes and ambitious dreams for a better future, from actors of all political persuasions, yet at the same time can be a focus for frustration, scepticism and sometimes deep hostility. In this unsettled state, civil society is often expected to step up in response to the immediate manifestations of an unfolding polycrisis. This is characterised by economic disruption, geopolitical instability, pandemics and other natural disasters, cultural and political polarisation, and climate and nature emergencies.

But this raises a central and pressing question: is civil society up to the task? Can it respond effectively, when there are compelling signs of distress within civil society? Is there a permacrisis within civil society itself? And if so, what does this look like in practice, and how can civil society be better supported?

The signs of distress within civil society are widespread, but evidence is rarely brought together or analysed in the round. Challenges facing civil society action include strained relationships with governments, spiralling demand for services, particularly in social welfare and in responding to emergency needs, set against a constrained and competitive funding environment, and perhaps a narrowing space for civil society. Alongside and related to this is a growing concern around staffing and volunteer recruitment, retention and well-being. Evidence from some countries of declining rates of volunteering, when so much is expected of civil society, increases the prospect of burn-out amongst existing managers, staff and volunteers. Strain within voluntary organisations and community groups may also be compounded by wider concerns around diversity, equity and inclusion, and the prospect of value conflicts and culture wars within and between organisations.

The special issue aims to provide a space to articulate these and other themes associated with a possible crisis emerging within civil society in different contexts. It also offers scope to explore and analyse myriad attempts to mitigate and move beyond distress, towards a situation where civil society is thriving rather than just about surviving. We invite academic papers on the broad theme of civil society in crisis. We would be pleased to receive submissions from across the globe on the extent, experiences causes and consequences of civil society in distress in different contexts.

Special issue

The special issue is being guest edited by Irene Hardill, Professor of Public Policy at Northumbria University and Rob Macmillan, Principal Research Fellow at the Centre for Regional Economic and Social Research (CRESR) at Sheffield Hallam University. The aim is for publication in 2027.

If you are interested, please get in touch with irene.hardill@northumbria.ac.uk and Rob.Macmillan@shu.ac.uk, or send an abstract of no more than 400 words (excluding any references) by the end of 29th March 2026.

About the journal

Global Discourse is an interdisciplinary, problem-oriented journal of applied contemporary thought operating at the intersection of politics, international relations, sociology and social policy. The journal's scope is broad, encouraging interrogation of current affairs with regard to core questions of distributive justice, wellbeing, cultural diversity, autonomy, sovereignty, security and recognition. All issues are themed and aimed at addressing pressing issues as they emerge. Rejecting the notion that publication is the final stage in the research process, Global Discourse seeks to foster discussion and debate between often artificially isolated disciplines and paradigms, with responses to articles encouraged and conversations continued across issues.
