Please find the statement below, as issued by the International Society for Third Sector Research and the American Sociological Association, on behalf of Professor Kinman Chan.

We write as leaders of the International Society for Third Sector Research (ISTR) and the American Sociological Association (ASA) to express grave concern about the recent sentence given to Dr. Kinman Chan of 16 months imprisonment.   ISTR is an interdisciplinary association of scholars from over 80 countries around the world. ASA is a professional society representing more than 12,000 people around the world.

Professor Chan has been a very distinguished member of ISTR for many years; indeed he was elected by the international membership to the board of directors and was selected to serve as the Secretary of the Board in 2017.  He was an associate professor of sociology at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Throughout his long academic career, Dr. Chan has been committed to promoting peaceful action for universal suffrage as stipulated in the Basic Law of Hong Kong and freedom of expression for all citizens. Moreover, his scholarship on civil society is widely recognized within the academic community throughout the world. We strongly protest his sentence as a threat to freedom of speech and a vibrant and healthy civil society in Hong Kong.  We urge the justice system in Hong Kong to reconsider his sentence and release him.
