ISTR Africa: African Civil Society Research Network Newsletter

At the International Society for Third Sector Research (ISTR) conference held in Sweden in June 2016, it was agreed that the network could benefit from a new institutional home. During the Africa Network meeting, attended by Dineo Seabe, Priscilla Wamucii, Jacob Mati, Bheki Moyo, Alan Fowler, Margery Daniels and other members of the International Society for Third Sector Research Africa Regional Network (ISTRAN), ISTRAN noted the decision of the ISTR board to enter into a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the West Africa Civil Society Institute (WACSI). This resulted in the signing of the MOU with WACSI.

The Potential of Crowdfundingfor African Nonprofits

Few organisations have a strategy for mobilising privatedonations and even fewer have considered crowdfunding asa possible strategy. Crowdfunding may not be the panacea but could form part of the funding strategies of smallerorganisations. The question, however, is whether it truly holdspotential as a funding mechanism for NPOs in Africa? Cancrowdfunding ameliorate some challenges, especially forsmall community-based organisations (CBOs), which are mostoften left out of the traditional funding market?
