State-level history & analysis of philanthropy -- Oregon

"State of Giving: Stories of Oregon Volunteers, Donors, and Nonprofits" (OSU Press 2015) is a valuable resource and teaching tool for anyone in nonprofit management, business, politics, public policy, community building, or other entrepreneurial or civic subjects. It profiles over 90 Oregon nonprofits and over 350 Oregon volunteers, donors, and nonprofit staff, to showcase their impact and motivation in working across six key areas of need: education inequity, the urban-rural divide, environmental conservation and sustainability, social justice and equity, hunger and homelessness, and arts and cultural vitality. "State of Giving’s perspective and resources are genuinely statewide, and it provides precise insights into why and how donors and volunteers give; the strategies of impactful nonprofits; the breadth of nonprofits working across Oregon's varied geographies and demographics; the impact of altruism on Oregon's economies, landscape, and society; the impact of new generations of givers and of grassroots campaigns; and opportunities for partnership between nonprofits, and between business, government, and the nonprofit sector. It also offers various toolkits to facilitate civic engagement, and because it has an accessibly-written narrative approach and presents a clear call-to-arms, it should be a useful fundraising and promotional tool for nonprofits across the state.
I think it's a very unusual and valuable resource, and I know of no other state that boasts such a compendium (it's receiving excellent press). Other states may use this as a model in the future to chronicle, celebrate, and promote regional philanthropy.
