The Center on American Muslim Philanthropy (CAMP) invites scholarly papers for its first annual Symposium on MuslimPhilanthropy and Civil Society—“Philanthropy and Civic Engagement: Imagining Faith through Practice”—to be held in Indianapolis, Indiana on September 1 and 2, 2016.  The Center is a 501(c)(3) organization committed to supporting scholarly research, promoting strategic philanthropy, and enhancing professional development in the field of Muslim philanthropy.  The Symposium is being held in partnership with the Lake Institute on Faith and Giving at Indiana University’s Lilly Family School of Philanthropy.  Its proceedings will be published in the inaugural Journal on Muslim Philanthropy and Civil Society published with assistance through a partnership with from Indiana University - University Library-Indianapolis.

As sociologist Robert Wuthnow observed of voluntary associations in the United States, faith-based groups are “one of the most important places in which people learn transferable civic skills (1999: 333). Rooted in Wuthnow’s insight, this first Symposium’s focus on —“Philanthropy and Civic Engagement: Imagining Faith through Practice” is designed to foster and disseminate groundbreaking research, from a global perspective, on the intersection of the role of philanthropy and the other activities of Muslims as faith-based actors committed to fostering ethics and practices which encourage other citizens to engage in civic activities and modes of participatory governance.

Papers in the form of first drafts are due by no later than April 15, 2016. The eight selected papers will be awarded a $1000 travel fellowship to present the paper at the Symposium. After the symposium, presenters will be given one month for revisions before they will be required to submit them for peer review and possible publication in the Journal. Papers must be no more than 7500 words including citations, footnotes and bibliography.
