Charities and Social Enterprises – a day for researchers and practitioners to discuss

current challenges and escalating change

Date: 24 April 2018

Location: Aston Business School, Aston University, Birmingham, UK

Charities and social enterprises are experiencing high levels of disruption in the availability of resourcing (funding and volunteers), leading to different structures and options to ensure sustainability. Social issues seem ever more pressing, with charities and social enterprises expected to be part of the solution. Government policies and regulation are also placing increasing demands on new modes of charity operation.

These are challenging times domestically and internationally. Reports, such as the House of Lords Select Committee on Charities, offer recommendations that may assist organisations in making decisions about their futures, but how does the voluntary sector respond to escalating change?

Challenges and escalating change are themes for this day on charities and social enterprise.  We begin the day with recent research on social issues and social enterprises, before considering charities and the future. Later in the day, we discuss challenges in accountability, disclosure and regulation. Thus, practitioners, academics, and PhD students in the field will have an opportunity to discuss papers covering a range of issues around charities and the future. From these discussions we also expect to develop research projects to assist the voluntary sector and its important stakeholders to respond and/or adapt to an uncertain future. The programme and registration portal can be accessed at
