About the Center
The Center for Nonprofit Research & Information was established at the Osaka School of International Public Policy (OSIPP) of Osaka University in April 2004, with the aim of promoting research and education on the private nonprofit sector. In addition to research on nonprofit-related topics such as civil society, NPO, NGO and volunteering, it also serves as a small library where nonprofit related books, documents and statistics are collected and made available to the public. The Center is led by Professor Naoto Yamauchi of OSIPP and staffed mainly by graduate students.
Major Education Initiatives:
One of the functions of the Center is curriculum and textbook development in the field of NPO-related studies at the graduate level. Also, as part of the effort to produce materials for the graduate school level, the Center has undertaken the development of textbooks, video library and lecture archive, all of which are available to the public. It is also exploring ways in which distance learning can be effectively provided to students of universities nationwide. Another undertaking of the Center is the collection and analysis of Japanese nonprofit-related statistical data, which are then made available to the public, most of whom are academics, students and practitioners, both from Japan and abroad. The Center also organizes open lectures and workshops on nonprofit-related topics, which are geared toward students as well as the general public. Practitioners, policy makers, and academics from both Japan and abroad are invited as guest speakers.
Major Research Projects:
The Center has also functioned as the secretariat of the Japan NPO Research Association (JANPORA), which was founded in 1999 and has now 1,200 individual members. The editorial board of the Nonprofit Review, the official journal of JANPORA, is also based at the Center.
