About the Center

Founded in 1997 by its present director, Rupert Graf Strachwitz, the Maecenata Institute is an independent not-for-profit research, teaching, public information, and policy centre, affiliated to Humboldt University. Members have a political science and/or sociology background. Special fields of interest include the relationship between civil society, the state and the market, the development of civil society in an international context, and the particular role of philanthropy and foundations. Research papers are published regularly in German and English.

Major Education Initiatives

  • Research College: an opportunity for master and pre-doc students from any German speaking university and any academic field, who are working on a topic relevant to the centre’s activities to be advised and coached, to interact and discuss, and in some cases to obtain small grants. Approx. 4 meetings p.a., approx. 25 members at any time.
  • Regular classes at Humboldt University
  • Frequent teaching commitments at other universities, summer schools, academies etc.

Major Research Projects

  • Muslim Philanthropy and Civic Engagement in a non-Muslim environment (2002 – 2004, publication in German and English 2005)
  • Civicus Civil Society Index Project: the German report (2003 - 2005, publication in German and English 2005)
  • Visions and Roles for Foundations in Europe: the German report (2002 – 2004, publication in English 2004)
