About the Center
The Institute works to strengthen the nonprofit sector by (a) conducting research for use by managers, leaders, policymakers, and scholars, (b) improving and supporting professional education in nonprofit management, and (c) convening practitioners, scholars, and leaders to develop new strategies for strengthening nonprofits and philanthropy. General interests include (i) the effects of ethnic and cultural diversity on the future of the nonprofit sector and philanthropy, (ii) roles of nonprofits in strengthening democratic government, (iii) measurement of conditions and trends shaping the nonprofit sector in the State of California, and (iv) applied research partnerships with nonprofit organizations. The Institute is part of the College of Professional Studies at the University of San Francisco. The college specializes in undergraduate and graduate degree programs for mid-career working adults. Dr. Michael Cortés serves as Institute director.
Major Education Initiatives:
- Curriculum development and support for the Master of Nonprofit Administration degree program.
- Curriculum development and support for the Nonprofit Administration emphasis track within the Bachelor of Public Administration degree program.
- The International Nonprofit Management Teaching Resource Center, an on-line service for instructors at colleges and universities worldwide.
Major Research Projects:
- Study of foundation support for nonprofit general operating costs.
- Adoption of new information and communication technology by small- and medium-sized nonprofit social justice organizations.
- Health of the nonprofit sector in selected regions of the State of California.
