About the Center
The Center for the Study of Philanthropy in Israel was established by Prof. HiIllel Schmid in 2006 in cooperation with the Israel Joint Distribution Committee.

The Center is engaged in comprehensive efforts to develop and promote basic and applied research knowledge on philanthropy in Israel and in Jewish communities throughout the world.

The Center was lunched on March 9th 2008 in Jerusalem with a presentation of the center research findings, and several lectures- on strategic giving and Maimonides' giving ladder, on the Genetic Influences on Altruism and Empathy and on the Israeli new philanthropy.

The Center focuses on research projects which explore the development of philanthropy in Israel and in Jewish communities throughout the world, and examine how those philanthropic activities have contributed to society. The research findings will serve to develop academic curricula and enrichment programs in the field of philanthropy, and to enhance philanthropic activity based on academic knowledge.

Major Education Initiatives
Based on the research finding, The Center developed academic curricula and enrichment programs in the field of philanthropy in cooperation with the Joseph J. Schwartz Graduate Program in Management of Community and Nonprofit Organizations at the Paul Baerwald School of Social Work and Social Welfare, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

Major research projects

  • To create a comprehensive database of major foundations and agencies that actively engage in philanthropic efforts in Israel. The database will serve as a source of knowledge for academic scholars and the general public.
  • To develop, gather, and disseminate knowledge on the sources of Jewish philanthropy and philanthropy in Israel, and to generate additional sources of philanthropy in Israel.
  • To study the role Philanthropy plays in shaping public policy in Israel and its impact on the welfare state.
