About the Center

The Centre of Philanthropy and Nonprofit Studies consists of academic staff and research students who have an interest in researching philanthropy and nonprofit organisations.  Areas of speciality include law, taxation, public policy, venture philanthropy, governance and management, accounting and finance, fundraising and marketing and donor behaviour.  Centre staff teach into two degree programs specifically tailored for students interested in pursuing careers in either management of or public administration for philanthropic and nonprofit organisations. The Centre has an active community service and continuing professional education program, with public and specialist seminars conducted throughout the year which are also made available on our online teaching and learning site.

Major Education Initiatives:

  1. Graduate Certificate in Philanthropic and Nonprofit Studies
  2. Masters of Business (Philanthropic & Nonprofit Studies)
  3. Video and Audio Streaming of public seminars on demand to the community.

Major Research Projects:

  • A Balanced Accountability Framework for Nonprofit Organisations
Researching the relationship between government and nonprofit organisations in terms of accountaibility for government grants to deliver welfare services.
  • Giving Australia
A landmark study of philanthropy in Australia, comprising three national surveys (of households, businesses and nonprofits) and extensive qualitative research across Australia.  CPNS was one of six research partners working with the Prime Minister’s Community Business Partnerships.
  • Nonprofit Car Fleet Safety
Australian nonprofit organisations operating fleets of cars for service delivery appear to have a higher incident rate than government or similar business car fleets. The three year project seeks to establish the incident data, analyse this data, devise and implement interventions to change driving behaviours and then measure the impact of those measures.
