About the Center

The mission of ASU's Center for Nonprofit Leadership and Management (CNLM) is to help build the capacity of social sector organizations to improve the quality of life in communities. This mission is accomplished through research, education, technical assistance and conference activities organized through a multi-disciplinary team of faculty, staff, students and community partners.  The Center, located in Greater Phoenix, Arizona, provides knowledge and tools that enhance the effectiveness of those who lead and manage nonprofit organizations. The Center is located in the fastest growing region in the United States within the largest university in the nation. ASU maintains a tradition of academic excellence in core disciplines and has become an important global center for innovative interdisciplinary teaching and research.

Major Education Initiatives

  • Through CNLM’s  Nonprofit Management Institute, dozens of professional
    development education workshops are provided to nonprofit practitioners on   
    contemporary topics.
  • CNLM facilitates an undergraduate certificate program in the field and is developing a Bachelor of Science degree program in nonprofit leadership and management that is available to students beginning fall semester 2006.
  • CNLM facilitates a graduate certificate program and is developing interdisciplinary Master of Science degree in nonprofit studies for graduate students available to students beginning fall semester 2006.

Major Research Projects

  • Faculty members of CNLM conduct the leading research project on Giving and Volunteering in the region.
  • The Center engages in research called “Scope of the Sector,” which is designed to understand the size, scope and dimensions of the nonprofit sector in the region.
  • Faculty members of the center engage in research on effective board governance to understand the variables that contribute to the successful leadership of nonprofit organizations.
