Candidates for 2014 Election
John Mohan John Mohan is Professor of Social Policy, University of Birmingham, and Director of the Third Sector Research Centre (www.tsrc.ac.uk). Previously, he worked at the University of Southampton (Professor of Social Policy, 2005-13), University of Portsmouth (1995-2005) and at Queen Mary College, University of London (1985 – 1995). He holds degrees (BA, PhD) from the University of Durham. He has been actively involved in recent major UK third sector research initiatives (TSRC; Centre for Charitable Giving and Philanthropy; the Northern Rock Foundation’s Third Sector Trends study). His work is interdisciplinary, falling between/cutting across social policy, geography, history and politics, and he has published in important journals in all of those fields. His current board experience includes: Board member, European Research Network on Philanthropy (ERNOP), since 2013; Advisory board, Centre for Health and the Public Interest, (2001-); Member, research advisory groups, Home Start UK (2009-) and the Institute For Volunteering Research, (2008-). Professor Mohan also served as a member on various Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) panels from 2001-2005. John’s current research is focused on the contemporary British voluntary sector, including projects on the distribution of resources and the pattern of engagement in voluntary activity. Previous work has included studies of health policy in the UK, reflected in various publications including Planning, Markets and Hospitals (Routledge, 2002) and A National Health Service? The Restructuring of Health Care in Britain Since 1979 (Macmillan, 1995). He has also worked on the pre-NHS voluntary hospital system and on the development of the hospital contributory scheme movement in the 20th century (Mutualism and Health Care with Martin Gorsky, Manchester UP, 2006). |
