Call for Proposals to Host Future International Conferences of the International Society for Third Sector Research (ISTR)

The International Society for Third Sector Research seeks proposals from institutions and colleagues around the world to organize and host future ISTR International Conferences, beginning in 2012 and every two years thereafter.

ISTR International Conferences are held every two years and have recently been held in Bangkok (2006) and Barcelona (2008). The 2010 International Conference will be held in Istanbul. Hosting an ISTR International Conference provides an opportunity for strategic engagement of academic institutions, civil society organizations, funders, government agencies and others in the host city, country and beyond.

Hosting an ISTR International Conference requires the identification of a committed host institution and/or individuals that can mobilize widespread support from academic, civil society and other institutions, access financial support from local private and public funders to generate funds needed to host the conference, and be able to provide logistical support for the conference and related activities.

We seek proposals that provide information on potential conference sites; hosts and supporting organizations; financial resources already available or that can be raised; logistical arrangements; visa restrictions (if any); and any other information relevant to hosting a major international scholarly conference.

Please contact ISTR Executive Director Margery Daniels at istr@jhu.edu with proposals, expressions of interest, and with any questions about this process.

Expressions of Interest to Host 2011 ISTR Asia-Pacific Regional Conference

The ISTR Asia-Pacific Regional Network seeks preliminary expressions of interest from colleagues and institutions throughout the Asia-Pacific region to organize and host the 7th ISTR Asia-Pacific Regional Conference, to be held in 2011. The ISTR Asia-Pacific Regional Network will decide on the host institution and location for the 2011 Asia Pacific Regional Conference during its meeting at the ISTR Conference in Istanbul in July 2010.
ISTR Asia-Pacific Conferences have been held in Thailand 1999, Japan 2001, China 2003, India 2005, Philippines 2007 and, most recently, in Taiwan 2009. It is desirable that the opportunity to host the conference be shared across this diverse region from north to south and east to west. Hosting a conference provides an opportunity for strategic engagement of stakeholders and promotion of the third sector within the host nation and with its neighbours.
Hosting the conference requires in the first instance the identification of an eager and committed host institution that can access support from potential members of a local site committee. Members of the Asia-Pacific Regional Network volunteer as the regional academic committee. The host institution will need to have capacity for local and regional fund-raising to generate the funds needed to host the conference and be able to provide administrative support for the abstract review and programming process and for conference planning and implementation. Past Asia-Pacific Regional Conferences have not necessarily required a registration fee and if one was applied it would need to be linked to the country development index (used for ISTR membership rates).  There is limited capacity therefore to generate conference funds from registrations.
ISTR Board member Wendy Earles is the ISTR Board contact person for expressions of interest on the ISTR 2011 Asia-Pacific Regional Conference.  Those interested should send their expression of interest in the form of a letter to Wendy at wendy.earles@jcu.edu.au, copying Margery Daniels at istr@jhu.edu.
We look forward to receiving detailed expressions of interest from any interested colleagues and institutions in the Asia-Pacific region by February 1, 2010.  The ISTR executive committee will have a preliminary discussion of the expressions of interest in February and ISTR Board members located in the region will support Asia-Pacific Regional Network members in their consideration of expressions of interest leading up to the Regional Network meeting in July 2010.

Dissertation Workshop on Social Capital and Civic Engagement in Asia
May 3-6, 2009
Asian Institute, Munk Centre for International Studies,1 Devonshire Place, Toronto, Ontario, M5S 3K7 Canada

Workshop Statement
This dissertation workshop seeks to engage scholars whose work explores the impacts of collective action and social capital, and its various component parts (trust, norms, networks and associations) in diverse parts of Asia, where the nature of state, civil society and alternate civilities is changing rapidly. Our premise is that the “productivity” of civic engagement in terms of enhancing the economic and political vitality of local communities depends, to a large extent, on the responsiveness of the local government and the nature of civil society/alternate civilities in the region under examination. As such, empirical research that seeks to discover and document how social capital and civic engagement interact with other aspects of social and political life to
enhance, or perhaps diminish, well-being is important to both intellectual and policy debates taking place across a variety of academic disciplines. Further, researchers who focus on Asia are well positioned to contribute to theoretical debates about the relative usefulness of the concept of “social capital” and associated terms such as social cohesion, cooperation, public participation, empowerment, and community as ways of apprehending the complex dynamics of Asian settings. The workshop thus seeks to bring empirical research and re-theorizations from Asia into a productive dialogue.
.
Eligibility and Arrangements

The workshop is intended for doctoral students whose dissertation projects concern the role of civic engagement and social capital, in its many variations, in fostering dynamic change in any part of contemporary Asia. The purpose of the workshop is to encourage and assist doctoral students who are just beginning work on these issues, as well as those who are farther along in their projects. The workshop will involve intensive discussion of the individual projects and also the larger theoretical and methodological issues that they raise. Possibilities for continuing associations among interested students and faculty will be explored. Applicants must be enrolled in a full-time doctoral program. They must have drafted a dissertation research proposal, even though it may not yet be approved by their committees. They must be prepared to engage in some work prior to the meeting, namely reading and commenting on the proposals of other participants to establish a basis for productive exchange at the event. The workshop will take place over three days on the campus of the University of Toronto. It will include twelve students and four faculty members from a variety of disciplines and
interdisciplinary fields. The Asian Institute at the University of Toronto will cover the costs of work, meals, and accommodation. Travel will be subsidized up to a maximum of CDN$600 per participant.

Application Deadline is January 30, 2009
Applications consist of two items: 1) a current curriculum vitae and 2) an 8 to 10 page double spaced dissertation proposal. Alternatively, if the work is well underway, an 8 to 10 page double spaced description of the specific issues being addressed, the intellectual approach, and the materials being studied. Workshop participants will be selected on the content of the submitted
projects, the potential for useful exchanges among them, and the benefits of including a wide range of disciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches and intellectual traditions. Applications should be sent in an email attachment to ai.soc@utoronto.ca. Applicants will be informed about whether or not they have been selected for the workshop by February 6th 2009. For further
information about the workshop or eligibility, please contact the workshop assistant at ai.soc@utoronto.ca.

Joint Statement of ISTR, ARNOVA, CINEFOGO, and  EMES
11 July 2008

Research associations, through their membership meetings, provide forums in which participants exercise their freedom of scholarly expression and debate.  The International Society for Third Sector Research (ISTR), the Association for Research on Nonprofit Organizations and Voluntary Action (ARNOVA), the CINEFOGO Network of Excellence, and the EMES European Research Network, are four research associations, made up of over 2000 members from over 80 countries around the world, that regularly convene to exchange knowledge and advance research on civil society, nonprofit and nongovernmental organizations, and philanthropy. We have seen the benefits to our societies as well as our research associations of freedom of expression, association and travel.  Our nations and communities are richer and stronger because individuals have had assured rights to travel, to meet, to speak and to publish, and to freely exchange knowledge and ideas.  The protection and exercise of these rights have been essential building blocks of healthy and democratic civil societies.
As citizens as well as scholars of many countries, including the United States (US) and the countries of the European Union (EU), we are alarmed and deeply disturbed at recent events – specifically denials of visas and the creation of other obstacles to travel imposed upon scholars over the last year.  A number of civil society scholars have been barred from the leading meetings in our field.  Professor Adam Habib, Deputy Vice Chancellor at the University of Johannesburg, South Africa, was unable to take part in ARNOVA’s annual meeting in November 2007 in Atlanta – at which he had been invited to give a plenary address – after his US visa was revoked by the State Department.  Other scholars have been prevented from participating in ISTR’s membership meeting in July 2008 in Barcelona due to their inability to obtain a Schengen visa to enter Europe.
These travel restrictions on leading global scholars have violated their and our civil liberties.   Their exclusion from the premiere academic forums in our field curtails our freedom of scholarly expression.  In addition, the targeted exclusion from academic forums of scholars from particular regions will negatively impact and seriously hamper the advance of knowledge and the resulting policies and practices flowing from this knowledge in these areas of study.
As members of the board of directors of  ISTR, ARNOVA, CINEFOGO and EMES, and as scholars of civil society, we issue this statement to express our alarm and deep concern, particularly at a time when global democratic exchange is of utmost importance. Our concern is not only for the scholar mentioned in this statement, but for all of our colleagues who are prevented from engaging in peaceful democratic discussion. We thus call upon our colleagues, institutions, and governments to support democratic freedoms and scholarly exchange.

ISTR Receives the Award for Creativity and Innovation in Third Sector Research

On March 12, 2008, the Israeli Center for Third-sector Research (ICTR) presented the “Award for Creativity and Innovation in Third Sector Research” to the International Society for Third Sector Research (ISTR). Since its foundation in 1997, the Israeli Center for Third-sector Research has aimed to conduct original research while also encouraging and recognizing the research of other individuals and organizations. The organization honored ISTR for its commitment to both research and the advancement of knowledge regarding the third sector. ICTR’s Chief Research Officer, Hagai Katz, claimed that although the decision to “grant the award to ISTR was an easy one,” his committee found it difficult to “put all the reasons” as to why ISTR deserved the award “on one plaque.” The plaque recognizes ISTR as a “major force” in “elevat[ing] Third Sector research internationally” through:
conducting bi-annual conferences in all parts of the world, each of which attracts hundreds of scholars, where pertinent issues are discussed and deliberated,…initiating and managing an academic journal (VOLUNTAS) devoted to international research on the third sector and civil society, which is considered one of the best in the field,…contributing in disseminating Third Sector research in all parts of the world through its regional networks, encouraging the participation of young scholars in conferences and building bridges between different research traditions…[and] encouraging the establishment of local associations of researchers in many countries, which promotes local and comparative research.

In past years, individual researchers, including notable third sector scholars and theorists such as Lester Salamon, Helmut Anheier, and Avner Ben-Ner, have received ICTR’s Award for Creativity and Innovation in Third Sector Research. This is the first time ICTR has granted the award to an organization and, according to Katz, “Giving the award to ISTR is giving an award to us and to all of our colleagues around the world.” Katz also emphasized that ISTR’s “contribution to [third sector research] is the direct result of its members’ contributions and engagement in ISTR’s publications, networks, and conferences.”

Message from the President of the International Society for Third Sector Research (ISTR), Jacqueline Butcher, on the conferral of the ICTR Award for Innovation in Third Sector Research to ISTR (March 12, 2008):
It is a great honor to accept the ICTR Award for Innovation in Third Sector Research for the International Society for Third Sector Research (ISTR). One of the purposes of our organization is to “build a global scholarly community with an international and comparative focus on civil society, the nonprofit sector and philanthropy.” ISTR’s relationship with the Israeli Center for Third Sector Research has long been a shining example of the development of collaborative programs and research initiatives around the world. The Center, in its more than ten years of existence, has achieved immense academic recognition in this field of study and has significantly increased the awareness of the need for information for policy and decision making on the third sector in Israel.

In addition, this award has a very special meaning for ISTR because ICTR’s Director, Dr. Benjamin Gidron, was one of the founding members of ISTR and served as our first President. He has been highly instrumental in the development of third sector research in Israel as well as a driving force in the creation of the Israeli Center. As an organization we value his special contributions as well as the long and close relationships between ICTR and ISTR, and we wish the Center the very best for all future endeavours and projects.

With best regard,
Jacqueline Butcher de Rivas

New Journal: GIVING. Thematic Issues in Philanthropy and Social Innovation

The project of creating a new academic journal, in Italian and English, which aspires to address a wide readership, is the result of several years of experience of the International Master Programme on Philanthropy and Social Entrepreneurship (MISP).  The journal was created at the University of Bologna in collaboration with the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University and other academic institutions in Africa and Europe.

Contributors to GIVING include a vast range of collaborators and advisors, including experts from the sector, journalists, commentators, non-profit organization managers, foundation officers and executives, as well as entrepreneurs and business leaders.

The project stems from the need to capitalize on the resources created by the scholars, experts and key figures of the philanthropic field.  The goal of the journal is the coordination of community of inquiry, leading to the emergence of studies on philanthropy, bringing together both academics and practitioners, in the framework of a common work aiming at the production of thematic issues in relevant fields of analysis.

GIVING intends to produces studies, research and relevant reflections on philanthropy as social investment; to analyze the essential tools for critical and rational assessment of philanthropic issues and practices; and to align philanthropic practices with the themes of scientific reflection, by means of the analysis of case studies which have an emblematic and guiding value.
Thanks to collaboration between those who operate in the world of socially responsible entrepreneurship in different fields, GIVING aims to be an outlet for research and action, a permanent workshop for ideas and practical solutions aimed to boost communication and interaction between a network of extremely high level consultants who represent the intellectual capital of the journal.

The journal is published biannually by Bononia University Press and is edited by Giuliana Gemelli.  The first issue will be published on June 30, 2007.   For more information and to subscribe, www.buponline.com

International Research Society for Public Management Launched

For the last decade, the International Research Symposium on Public Management has brought together an increasingly influential and international research community around the issues of public management and public policy implementation. At the tenth conference, held at Glasgow Caledonian University in April this year, this community took a new step forward by formalising its network as the International Research Society for Public Management (IRSPM). Founding President of the Society, Professor Stephen P. Osborne of Aston University, said, ‘This is an exciting step forward for our research community. IRSPM is the one truly international and inter-disciplinary society devoted to the study of public management. It is well positioned, and committed to fostering collaboration with other leading bodies in the field in order to drive forward ‘state of the art’ research and theory about public management.’

Professor Jean Hartley, of Warwick University, said she was ‘delighted to have witnessed the establishment of a Society devoted to high quality research and which presents a significant resource for both the academic and practitioner communities.’ Professor Larry Lynn of Texas A & M University also heralded the founding of IRSPM as ‘formalizing an important international community of scholars’ and Professor Owen Hughes of Monash University welcomed the founding of the Society as ‘the fruition of twelve years of successful conferences and collaborations.’

In addition to supporting and developing the conference itself, the new Society will promote collaborative research and dissemination initiatives with such bodies as the European Group on Public Administration and the American-based Public Management Research Association, Public and Nonprofit Division of the AOM and ARNOVA. It will support the further development of its adopted journal, Public Management Review. Professor Elio Borgonovi of Bocconi University has additionally emphasized that ‘the support and development of doctoral students is also a prominent aim of the Society.’

Queries about membership of IRSPM should be forwarded to the Membership Secretary Zoe Radnor (zoe.radnor@wbs.ac.uk ). Further information on the founding of IRSPM and its future plans can be received from its founding President, Stephen P Osborne,  s.p.osborne@aston.ac.uk or http://psm.abs.aston.ac.uk

SANGONeT Launches South African NGO Portal
(www.sangonet.org.za)

The Southern African NGO Network (SANGONeT) is pleased to announce the launch of a new Internet portal for and about the NGO sector in South Africa. This portal is primed to become the gateway to the South African NGO sector, boasting the most comprehensive, validated and easily searchable NGO directory in the country, containing information about more than 2,500 organisations. This directory is augmented by wide ranging and diverse information for and about the NGO sector, including general news, press releases, campaigns, vacancies, event calendars, case studies, toolkits and research reports.

This is further enhanced by the inclusion of a technology planning and procurement facility, NGO.ZA. Another bonus for the NGO sector is the inclusion of a donor database on the portal,  the Thusanang Donor Database, which includes information about more than 100 donors, including the kinds of projects they fund, the size of their grants, their geographical focus and their contact details. The new portal will provide an important resource for the NGO sector, giving it access to information that will develop its institutional capacity, build cohesion and increase its impact. At the same time, it will map the work of the sector, providing donors and other stakeholders with valuable information about NGO activities on the ground, the challenges they face and their impact. The portal is also intended to inform strategic decision making for all development stakeholders engaging with the NGO sector.

According to SANGONeT’s Executive Director, David Barnard, the portal will become an important community space, providing NGOs with a strategic platform to communicate with each other and other stakeholders. It will be a mechanism for NGOs to air their views, while also creating the opportunity for other stakeholders to critique and evaluate the sector. Moreover, it is envisaged to become a market place where services can be procured and exchanged. The establishment of this new portal is the culmination of SANGONeT’s years of experience of working in the online environment, as well as an extensive consultation process conducted during the past year with NGOs, funders and other stakeholders throughout South Africa. The aim of this process was to assess the information needs of the NGO sector as, ultimately, the success of the new portal will be determined by the extent to which NGOs and other stakeholders use the information on the portal, as well as actively contribute information on their own activities and experiences.

The new portal has replaced the SANGONeT website at www.sangonet.org.za. For more information about the portal and how you could contribute information on your organisation’s activities, please contact: Fazila Farouk, Deputy Director, SANGONeT, Tel: (011) 403-4935 / E-mail: fazila@sangonet.org.za

Research on Foundations in Northeast Brazil

Latin America Orientagao em Responsabilidade Social (LARS), a Brazilian organisation that assists institutions in developing corporate social responsibility and good governance programmes, has recently produced a report on private and public foundations in the State of Ceara, Northeast Brazil. The report provides first-hand empirical evidence on how local foundations operate in Ceara and highlights the problems with which they are faced. The report serves to support the institutional agenda of a newly established indigenous association of 10 foundations (Associagco das Fundagues do Estado do Ceara (AFECE), set up with the assistance of LARS, in July 2005.
