The Peter Dobkin Hall History of Philanthropy Prize
Accepting Applications until October 15, 2016
Peter Dobkin Hall, who died last April, was an active and long-time ARNOVA member, winner of the organization’s 2008 Award for Distinguished Achievement in Nonprofit and Voluntary Action Research, and one of the most influential historians of the nonprofit sector of the last half-century. This $500 prize, to be awarded annually, will honor Hall’s memory by celebrating the published book that has made the most significant scholarly contribution to our understanding of the history of philanthropy. For purposes of the prize, “philanthropy” will be defined in broad ARNOVA terms to include the history of nonprofit organizations, civil society, and philanthropy.
The winner will be presented the award at this year’s ARNOVA conference, where he or she will be expected to give a paper based on the work at a panel that will also serve to highlight the state of historical inquiry into the nonprofit and philanthropic sectors.
