Regional Youth Exchange Forum:

Challenges of the new generation in the context of legitimacy crisis

Hammamet, 9th – 11th October 2013

Among almost all CSOs in the countries witnessing political transformation youth have emerged as a shared focus in filling the void created by the lack of government attention towards meeting requirements of the youth group. Such an important trend strongly corresponds with the Foundation for the Future’s mission and objectives, and the respective strategy developed recently in response to the political changes started in Tunisia over two years ago and infiltrated into other countries in the region. Hence, the Foundation’s office in Tunis captured this amalgamation of interests in prioritizing youth engagement and bringing their relevant interests to the forefront to become major components in its respective action plans.

Consequently, the Foundation for the Future organized a Regional Youth Exchange Forum in the Tunisian town of Hammamet during 9th – 11th October 2013, which was held at the International Cultural Center / Dar Sebastient.

The Forum provided a unique opportunity for the participants to share their relevant experiences through this rich interaction and debate and consequently develop recommendations at the end of each workshop. The discussion groups consisted of 14 workshops according to the different topics the Forum addressed in relations to democracy in the Middle East and North Africa, focusing on the following issues:

·        Defining and analyzing  youth participation in the decision-making process

·        Transitional democracy and crises of legitimacy

·        Expectations of young people in the MENA region

·        Youth and Media

The last session of the Forum was designated for summarizing all recommendations that could be highlighted as follows:

·        Dispatching a full report on the Forum’s deliberations and agenda to the government.
    ·      Agreeing to work on a particular proposal through a commission and monitor its impact on the community.
    ·        Establishing a network supervised by the Foundation for the Future.
    ·        Organizing regular meetings to follow up on the recommendations and monitor their impact in the youth communities.
    ·        Organizing training sessions for youth on capacity building.

It is expected that the participants to the Forum will pursue this important opportunity by developing joint initiatives and launching a youth network throughout the MENA region.
