There is a Science of Philanthropy (SPI) conference being held at the University of Chicago on September 6-7th (Wednesday and Thursday). The goal of SPI is to encourage experimental (field and lab) research on charitable giving. The conference this year is organized by myself, John List, and our colleagues at the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy (Sara Konrath, Amir Pasic, Rich Steinberg, and Mark Wilhelm).

We are pleased to announce the keynote speakers: Lise Vesterlund (University of Pittsburgh) and Ragan Petrie (Texas A&M University).

Presentations are invited that use laboratory, field experiment, or related methods to investigate social preferences that shape philanthropic giving (including altruism, reciprocity, inequity aversion, warm-glow giving, etc.), techniques charities may use to increase giving, the role of culture on giving, and development of social preferences (i.e., experiments with children/young adults). Topics that are also of interest are volunteerism, the organization of charities/how they operate, and organ/blood donation. Please visit the conference website to see the papers that were presented in past years.

In addition to providing an avenue for research discussions, another aim of the conference is to bring together researchers studying charitable giving with practitioners in the field of philanthropy. The conference is roughly divided into two parallel tracks, with a series of papers that lean toward basic science and a series that is more applied (whereby practitioners would be encouraged to attend the applied sessions). When you submit your abstract, please specifiy which track you think fits best. We may need to adjust your decision when we organize the schedule.

To keep a small group with opportunities for meaningful discussion, conference attendance is initially open to presenters or by invitation, with the hope of opening it up to non-presenters if spots remain available. There is a registration fee to attend the conference for speakers and attendees ($215 for faculty and $108 for students). A block of rooms has been reserved at Hyatt Place near the university. We will be able to offset lodging costs for selected graduate student poster presenters thanks to the Frantzreb Fund from IU; if you are selected, we will notify you at your acceptance.
