INTERNATIONAL SEMINAR
on
SELF HELP INITIATIVES,
MICRO FINANCE
AND
SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
2nd to 4th January 2015

Citizen participation and self-help initiatives are often
cited to be indicators of a mature civil society.
Development process becomes sustainable when people
participate in the design and execution of development
process. The inability of the State as well as the formally
designated agencies to facilitate development too calls for
self-help initiatives on the part of the people to realize
their development goals. An outstanding example of selfhelp
initiatives is the Microfinance mechanism that has
lead to the empowerment of women and other
disadvantaged groups all over the world. Through the
examples set by initiatives such as Grameen Bank in
Bangladesh, SEWA in India and the like, microfinance
has proved to be an important facilitator of sustainable
development. There are self-help initiatives of several
other types as well including labor sharing self- help
groups, self-help green initiatives, self-help micro
enterprises. SHG and Cooperative approaches to
management of local resources such as water, forest
resources and even community led alternative dispute
settlement mechanisms have emerged both in India and
elsewhere in the world. The present seminar addresses a
host of issues related to such initiatives.
