Facilitating Self-Help Groups for Breast Cancer Survivors in Post Communist Ukraine Oksana Boyko In post communist Ukraine, numerous non-governmental civic organizations have been developed. Now the civic movement is addressing burning social problems that cannot be solved by the government alone. A common way is to establish self-help groups in local areas that at certain stages of development turn into self-help organizations; these groups and organizations assist in the psycho-social rehabilitation of patients. The particular focus of the research is the needs of survivors of breast cancer and how these might be met by self-help organizations that are developed from self- help groups. Case studies of local cancer centers and their activities in Kiev and Chrnigiv are described within the context of other NGOs in Kiev, Ukraine. Back to Dublin Conference main page.
