ISIRC 2017: Beyond Boundaries? Organisations, Systems and Social Innovation
The ninth annual International Social Innovation Research Conference (ISIRC 2017) will explore social innovation within and beyond the organisation. It invites research-led reflection on the organisational boundaries recast by social innovation, the systemic imperatives of a growing focus on social innovation, and the cross-cutting implications of these for theory and practice. Empirical, conceptual and practice-informed research contributions are encouraged.

The EGPA permanent study group on “Civil Society, Citizens and Government” is organizing its annual meeting at the EGPA-conference in Milan, August 30 - September 1, 2017 ( http://www.egpa-conference2017.org ). We welcome two kinds of contributions: 'work in progress' and 'completed work'
Work in progress
We welcome papers/presentations that are still work in progress on the following themes, related to the focus of our study group:
(1) Government – civil society relations;
(2) Civil society – citizen relations;
(3) The internal functioning and organization of civil society initiatives;
(4) The co-production and co-creation of public services.
We will dedicate some sessions in which ongoing research can presented and discussed, with the aim of receiving feedback from peers. Short abstracts (200 words) should be uploaded through the submission-page of the EGPA website by April 15, 2017. Full papers/presentations should be provided by August 15, 2017.
We will also dedicate some sessions on completed research, for papers that are (almost) publishable, on the same four themes. We aim at selecting the best papers for a special issue in a journal (to be selected yet). For these sessions, we welcome empirical papers. Short abstracts (200 words) should be uploaded through the submission-page of the EGPA website by April 15, 2017. Full papers should be provided by July 15, 2017.

Special Issue: Nonprofit Management in Transition in Administrative Sciences
Nonprofit management is both an academic field of study and a profession. Nonprofit management is unique in a wide range of management issues, including accountability, networking, volunteer HR practices and recruitment, organizational change and crisis, performance, and lobbying.
Nonprofit management includes theories that explain the nature and the behaviour of non-profit organizations and describe their role in society.
Nonprofit management reflects the effect of internal and external constraints. The relationship with the government and business settings, the application of for-profit practices and the adoption of efficient practices in times of economic crisis, as well as the development of HR practices.
In the present Special Issue, we seek to cover empirical and conceptual studies in the area of Nonprofit management. We welcome contributions—empirical, conceptual and case studies related to all the above and not only aspects of non-profit management. We are particularly interested on the evolution of management practices following the global economic crisis. How have non-profit organizations responded, what administrative changes have been introduced, and what measures of success they use to assess the degree of performance?

2017 Voluntary Sector and Volunteering Research Conference

This is the leading UK-based interdisciplinary research conference for academics, policy makers and practitioners with a shared interest in researching issues related to voluntary organisations and volunteering in the context of contemporary challenges.
Organised in partnership by NCVO, the Voluntary Sector Studies Network (VSSN) and the Institute for Volunteering Research (IVR), this conference is an opportunity to share research and network across different contexts, countries and different parts of the UK.

The Satell Institute, an independent think tank on corporate social responsibility (CSR), is seeking proposals for research on all aspects of CSR, corporate philanthropy, corporate community engagement, and corporate citizenship broadly construed. The Satell Institute (affiliated with University of Pennsylvania and the University of Connecticut) is focused on in broadening our collective understanding of CSR and improving its practice. The Institute will make a first round of grants for papers that will range in length from 3,000 to 5,000 words, and that will take the form of either individual or comparative case studies, spotlights on innovations in the field, in-depth interviews with CSR leaders, translations of academic research into more readable forms, and other research products that have the potential to inform leaders in the CSR field. Research grants will be available to faculty at all levels, post-doctoral fellows, advanced doctoral students, freelance journalists, and research-driven practitioners. The grants will range in size from $3,000 to $10,000. Call for papers, Third Sector Review special issue, “Microfinance: A ‘Magic Bullet’ for Poverty Alleviation and Empowerment?”
In contemporary times microfinance is promoted by powerful organisations, such as the United Nations (UN) and the World Bank, as a cutting edge financial innovation that has the potential to meet specified development ends and goals, such as poverty alleviation and women’s empowerment. Indeed, the UN officially declared 2005 as the ‘International Year of Microfinance’. However, research on the impact of microfinance is often conflicting, with certain studies providing evidence of the empowering effects of microfinance, and other studies analysing its disempowering potentials. Such conflicting perspectives challenge the “magic bullet” notion of microfinance, and illustrate the richness of research in this field. In celebration of this diversity, this special issue calls for papers on financial inclusion and microfinance practices in the third sector from a range of different academic disciplines, and fields of practice in the region and beyond. We invite critically informed studies that examine microfinance both in the context of its empowering and disempowering prospects.
Questions that may be addressed include, but are not limited to:
· Accounting and accountability tensions in microfinance organisations.
· The role of microfinance in poverty alleviation and (dis)empowering women.
· Issues in relation to management and governance in microfinance organisations.
· Historical evaluations of the practice of microfinance.
· Insights into undertaking research and research engagement within microfinance organisations.
· Policy and regulatory issues in microfinance initiatives.
· The roles of the third sector in fostering entrepreneurship.
· Multifaceted cultural understandings of microfinance, including indigenous perspectives.
Articles may be framed around a particular type of microfinance practice or an organisation. We encourage both conceptual and empirical contributions, including comparative analyses, case study research, survey research and theoretical contributions. In light of TSR’s commitment to including voices from the field, we also invite contributions from practitioners.
This issue will be edited by guest editors Dr. Farzana Aman Tanima (University of Wollongong, Australia) and Dr. Nunung Nurul Hidayah (Aston Business School, United Kingdom).

Call for Papers for a Symposium on: “Entrepreneurship in the Public and Nonprofit Sectors”

Entrepreneurship is a topic of growing interest to academics and policymakers. Scholars in the field of public administration have been slower than academics in other fields (e.g., business administration and economics) to embrace the study of entrepreneurship. That is not surprising since entrepreneurial activity has traditionally focused on the private sector and the pursuit of profit.
However, in recent years, we have witnessed a substantial rise in entrepreneurial initiatives in the public and non-profit sectors. These initiatives involve numerous government and non-profit entities, including federal agencies, universities, foundations, and state and local governments. Entrepreneurship in the public and non-profit sectors has broader social goals than conventional forms of entrepreneurship, such as the more rapid commercialization and use of inventions and new technologies arising from federally-funded research, enhancement of regional economic development, sustainability and other environmental objectives, and remedying other market failures with innovative solutions. These new initiatives also have important implications for the “entrepreneurial” behavior of public sector managers (e.g., Lewis, 1980; Schneider and Teske, 1992) and thus, the vast literature in public administration and political science on public entrepreneurship (e.g., Ostrom 1964, 2005; Wagner, 1966; Osborne and Gaebler, 1993; McGinnis and Ostrom, 2012).
The proposed symposium seeks to bring together papers that address these issues. Another key goal of the symposium is to foster stronger links among entrepreneurship researchers in a variety of social science disciplines (including the field of management) and public administration scholars.
Some themes that papers in the proposed symposium might address are:
• Public entrepreneurship and public sector entrepreneurship (Bellone and Goerl, 1992; Moon, 1999; Bernier and Hafsi, 2007; Leyden and Link, 2015)
• Public policies and programs to promote entrepreneurship. For example:
o The Bayh-Dole Act (Aldridge and Audretsch, 2011; Berman, 2012)
o The Small Business Innovation Research Program (Audretsch, Link, and Scott, 2002), and
o The NSF I-Corps Program (Pellicane and Blaho, 2015)
• Social entrepreneurship and entrepreneurship in the non-profit sector (Frumkin and Kim, 2001; Korosec and Berman, 2006; Waddock and Post, 1991; Terjesen, Bosma, and Stam, 2015; Schneider, 2017; Terjesen, 2017)
• Academic/university entrepreneurship, including:
o Technology transfer offices, and
o Property-based institutions, such as incubators/accelerators and science/technology parks (Link, Siegel, and Wright, 2015; Siegel, Waldman, and Link, 2003; Yu, Stough, and Nijkamp, 2009)
• The contribution of entrepreneurship to regional economic development (e.g., Decker, Haltiwanger, Jarmin, and Miranda, 2014)
The Symposium will incorporate regular PAR features, including Theory to Practice, Research Synthesis, Public Administration and the Disciplines, Book Reviews, Perspectives and Commentary.
The Review Process and Tentative Timetable
The following is a tentative schedule for the proposed symposium:
• Submission of papers: May 2018
• First Round Completed Reviews of submitted papers: August 2018
• Developmental workshop at the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, D.C. September 2018
• Submission of final papers: January-March 2019
Note that there will be a special developmental workshop for highly promising papers under review, which will be held at the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, D.C.

Philanthropy & Education is pleased to announce a call for submissions for the inaugural November 2016 publication. The journal is sponsored by Teachers College, Columbia University and published by Indiana University Press.
The journal’s mission is to promote scholarship and inform practice around philanthropy, which is broadly defined as including, but not limited to: fundraising, volunteerism, civic engagement, alumni relations, corporate social responsibility, prosocial behavior development, and the professionalization of the field of practice. Thus, Philanthropy & Education seeks to publish empirical and scholarly studies that are accessible to practitioners with clear implication for implementation.
The Editorial Board will welcome papers from all aspects of education (K-20+), both domestically and internationally, from a variety of disciplinary perspectives, including but not limited to: anthropology, economics, history, law, management, political science, psychology, public administration, religious studies, social work, and sociology. To further the journal's mission, Philanthropy & Education encourages submissions from scholar-practitioners, particularly those who have recently completed their dissertations.
